Hooge's Hazelnuts

The Fraser Valley is the largest producer of hazelnuts in Canada.  Whether fresh, roasted or candied, hazelnuts are a nutritious snack with many health benefits.  Hooges Hazelnuts in Greendale is operated by Helmut & Selma Hooge.  You'll find this park-like yard and tidy orchard just a block down from the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.  On a clear day Cheam and other mountains can be seen from anywhere on the farm.  You're welcome to bring a blanket and a picnic lunch to spread out under a shade tree, or in the orchard.  In-shell hazelnuts from Hooge's farm will be available as well as shelled organic nuts from other local growers.  The hazelnut harvesting equipment will be on display and someone will be on hand to explain the harvesting process.  Three pet llamas will stare curiously at all visitors but have been told not to spit at them!

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a 130-hectare (325 acre) site located on the un-dyked floodplain of the Vedder River.  Managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society, the site is home to over 150 Great Blue Heron nests and a wide variety of wetland wildlife & vegetation.
